Avon Historical Museum

The Avon Historical Preservation Society started in 1996 when volunteers began collecting and documenting data. Former U. S. Senator George McGovern’s father, Reverend J. C. McGovern, served here as pastor during the 1920s at the Wesleyan Church . However, in 2000 the Wesleyan Methodist Church closed and the building was given to house the present-day museum. Much time has been spent by volunteers in matting and duplicating photographs that were loaned and donated.

You’ll find:

  • Written and pictorial exhibits of many Avon family histories
  • Memorabilia of former Senator George McGovern
  • Dr. Greenfield's personal memorabilia
  • Robert Griffith's World War items
  • Large display of Fire Department items
  • Community Bank items
  • Rural Area School items
  • A room full of Avon School history-including annuals, trophies, banners, early band uniforms
  • Short, historical description of every house in Avon
  • Records of each lot and business history, including present owners/operators
  • Many items from the original Wesleyan Church

The museum sponsors an Avon History Essay Contest for 8th graders each year.

The present officers are: President - Ludd Bertsch, Vice-President - Laurie Luke, Secretary - Sharon Bertsch and Treasurer - Rosalee Sternhagen. Serving on the Board of Directors are Aryls Thompson and Todd Luke. All work in the museum is by volunteers and anyone is welcome to join.
